TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is coordinating with several Indonesian Embassies in different countries to prepare precautionary measures after five Indonesian citizens on the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) 2.0 humanitarian mission were kidnapped by the Israeli military in the Eastern Mediterranean on May 18, 2026.
Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Yvonne Mewengkang, stated that the Ministry has requested the Indonesian Embassies in Ankara, Cairo, Rome, Amman, and the Indonesian Consulate General (KJRI) in Istanbul to prepare precautionary measures such as issuing Substitute Travel Documents (SPLP) if the passports of Indonesian citizens are confiscated, as well as providing medical support if needed.
"The Indonesian representatives are also approaching local authorities to ensure transit access and the repatriation process for Indonesian citizens can proceed smoothly without immigration barriers," said Yvonne in a video message to Tempo on Tuesday, May 19, 2026.
Yvonne stated that these measures were taken after five out of nine Indonesian citizens participating in the humanitarian mission were abducted. The remaining four Indonesian citizens on two different ships were still sailing around the waters of Cyprus.
"The situation in the field is still very dynamic. The four Indonesian citizens who are still sailing remain at risk and could be intercepted or captured by the Israeli military at any time," she said.
Yvonne stated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Indonesian representative, will continue to monitor the situation, verify the positions and conditions of the Indonesian citizens, and prepare protective measures as needed in the field.
"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs urges the government of Israel to immediately release all ships and international humanitarian mission crew detained, and ensure the continuation of the distribution of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people in accordance with international humanitarian law," she said.
The list of names of Indonesian citizens participating in the mission includes Herman Budianto Sudarsono from GPCI-Dompet Dhuafa on board the Zapyro Ship; Ronggo Wirasanu (GPCI-Dompet Dhuafa) on the Zapyro Ship; Andi Angga Prasadewa (GPCI-Rumah Zakat) on the Josef Ship; Asad Aras Muhammad (GPCI-Spirit of Aqso) on the Kasr-1 Ship; Hendro Prasetyo (GPCI - SMART 171) on the Kasr-1 Ship.
Furthermore, there are journalists such as Bambang Noroyono from Republika on the BoraLize Ship; photojournalist Thoudy Badai Rifan Billah from Republika on the Ozgurluk Ship; Tempo journalist Andre Prasetyo Nugroho on the Ozgurluk Ship; and a contributor for iNewsTV, Beritasatu, and CNN, Rahendro Herubowo, also on the Ozgurluk Ship.
Out of the nine listed Indonesian citizens participating in this mission, five of them were abducted by the Israeli military.
