TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The plan for the United States’ strikes on Yemen was leaked in a private Signal chat group. The information was reportedly shared by U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in a chat group that included his wife, brother, and personal lawyer.
According to a New York Times report cited by Channel News Asia, this is the second time Hegseth has been accused of sharing sensitive military information on the commercial messaging application.
Last month, The Atlantic magazine revealed that its editor-in-chief was inadvertently included in a Signal chat where officials, including Hegseth and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, discussed strikes on Yemen, which took place on March 15, 2025.
The revelation of the strike plan sparked an uproar. The Pentagon Inspector General is still investigating the leaked information.
On Sunday, New York Times reported that Hegseth had shared information about the March 15 attack with the second Signal chat group. The shared information included the flight schedule of the F/A-18 Hornet targeting the Houthis in Yemen.
The Times stated that, unlike the unintentional leaks where journalist Jeffrey Goldberg was mistakenly added to the group, this chat group was created by Hegseth. The other chat was initiated by Waltz.
The members of the group consist of his wife and “about a dozen other people from his personal and professional inner circle in January, before his confirmation as defense secretary.”
Hegseth's wife, Jennifer, is a journalist and former Fox News producer. The group also includes his brothers Phil and Tim Parlatore, both of whom serve in the Pentagon.
Parlatore still serves as Hegseth's personal lawyer. There has been no official statement from the Pentagon.
