TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Statistics Indonesia (BPS) reported that the U.S. dominates Indonesia's exports of apparel and footwear, surpassing those of Japan and South Korea from the beginning of the year until March.
The export overview was presented by BPS chief Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti. "The U.S. is the primary destination for Indonesia's exports of apparel and footwear," said Amalia in a BPS press release conference on Monday, April 21, 2025.
Amalia detailed three categories of apparel and footwear products sold in the U.S. market. The first being H.S. Code 61, comprising articles of apparel and clothing accessories, knitted or crocheted. Of all commodities, this export commodity to the U.S. is the highest at 63.40 percent. "Followed by the same goods exported to Japan and South Korea," she said.
Based on BPS data, exports of knitted apparel and clothing accessories with H.S. code 61 to the U.S. reached 38.62 thousand tons as of March, while exports to South Korea were significantly less at 3.12 thousand tons and to Japan 3.30 thousand tons.
Next are the exports of articles of apparel and clothing accessories, not knitted or crocheted, or H.S. Code 62. Amalia explained that Indonesia's export market share to the U.S. for this commodity is 42.96 percent, followed by Japan and then South Korea.
Indonesian exports to the U.S. for H.S. Code 62 amounted to 17.70 thousand tons since the beginning of this year, followed by Japan with 4.28 thousand tons and to South Korea with 2.89 thousand tons.
The same goes for footwear products or H.S. code 64, which accounted for 34.16 percent of the total Indonesian footwear exports. "Then, the second largest export destination for footwear from Indonesia is the Netherlands, followed by Belgium, Japan, and China," she said.
