Trump's Iran Agreement Sparks Backlash From Some Republicans

3 hours ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - US President Donald Trump said he expects all parties involved to respect the agreement with Iran and halt hostilities, while calling on countries in the Middle East to allow diplomatic efforts to continue, according to DW.

“We expect a complete ceasefire on all fronts, including Lebanon, Hezbollah and Israel,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social account, adding that Washington is “committed to peace.”

The US leader also urged countries across the region to “maintain their commitment” and allow negotiations with Iran to “beautifully unfold.” Trump said the agreement could provide an opportunity to reduce tensions and move toward a broader diplomatic solution.

However, the deal has sparked a rare divide within Trump’s Republican Party, with several hawkish members criticizing the agreement and arguing that it does not deliver the decisive outcome the president had previously promised.

Republican Senator Bill Cassidy criticized the agreement in a post on X, saying former President Ronald Reagan would be “rolling over in his grave.”

He described the deal as “the worst foreign policy blunder in decades,” arguing that it failed to meet expectations among conservatives who had called for a tougher approach toward Iran.

Senator Roger Wicker, chairman of the powerful Senate Armed Services Committee, also voiced opposition, saying the memorandum was “completely out of step” with Trump’s stated goals.

Wicker criticized provisions related to sanctions relief and the unfreezing of Iranian funds, saying they were being offered in exchange for what he described as Iran’s agreement to continue negotiations for another 60 days.

Republican Senator Ted Cruz also urged caution, warning Trump against providing Iran with financial resources that could allow Tehran to rebuild its capabilities and potentially become a renewed threat to the United States.

Despite the criticism, some Trump allies have defended the agreement and called for patience. Senator Lindsey Graham said the deal had reopened the Strait of Hormuz, suspended hostilities, and created an opportunity to determine whether diplomacy could help curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
