TEMPO.CO, JakartaMalaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Monday, April 14, 2025, said he will meet with Thailand's Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Myanmar junta head Senior General Min Aung Hlaing in Bangkok.

As reported by Channel NewsAsia, Anwar said the meeting with the Myanmar junta leader is intended to push for the extension of the ceasefire between the military government and rebel groups to assist in post-earthquake recovery.

"I thank General Min Aung Hlaing for responding positively to our call ... During my meeting with him on Apr 17, I will push for the ceasefire to be extended," said Anwar.

As the chair of the regional ASEAN bloc this year, Anwar said the upcoming meeting with Min Aung Hlaing on Thursday, April 17, 2025, will be held on humanitarian grounds, as there have been no formal engagements between Myanmar and ASEAN.

Anwar said he will go to Bangkok after receiving a visit from Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is scheduled to visit Kuala Lumpur on April 15-17, 2025.

He said it is the first time that a head of an ASEAN country will hold a meeting with the Myanmar junta leader.

Although ASEAN still adheres to the 5-Point Consensus that serves as a prerequisite for ASEAN-Myanmar cooperation, Anwar mentioned that the meeting is aimed at assisting the distribution of humanitarian aid after the devastating earthquake.

Malaysia will build temporary hospitals operated by the Malaysian Armed Forces.

However, Anwar said the conditions he put forward are clear, that aid will only be distributed if the Myanmar military regime agrees to extend the ceasefire.

Myanmar was hit by a devastating earthquake last month that killed thousands of people and caused significant damage.

The country has been in turmoil since early 2021, when the military toppled the elected civilian government, triggering a civil war.

The military junta and rebel groups have unilaterally announced ceasefires to support earthquake relief, but they accuse each other of violating the deal.

ASEAN wants Myanmar to implement the bloc's five-point peace plan to stop the fighting and has barred the ruling generals from attending its meetings because they have failed to comply.

Meanwhile, as reported by Antara, Anwar also said he would meet with Shinawatra to discuss the issue of flooding on the border of the two countries, in the areas of Golok River and Rantau Panjang, Kelantan, in southern Thailand.

Efforts to repair the bridge and dredge the Golok River which caused flooding in the southern Thailand and Kelantan region. The Golok River is the natural border between Kelantan on the Malaysian Peninsula and southern Thailand.
