TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Provincial Government plans to deploy closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at public facilities throughout the city. Deputy Governor Rano Karno estimated the cost of installing these cameras could reach up to Rp380 billion or roughly US$24 million.
"This budget will fund nearly 30,000 CCTV cameras," Rano said during an inspection of a pedestrian bridge (JPO) on Daan Mogot Street, West Jakarta, on Tuesday, April 15. He noted that the cost is relatively modest given Jakarta’s expansive area.
The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) politician said that the CCTV initiative is to keep the campaign promise made by him and Governor Pramono Anung. He stated that the cameras will initially be installed in parks, with plans to expand to neighborhood units next year. "Jakarta has 30,418 RT/RW (neighborhood units) in total," Rano added.
Rano visited the Daan Mogot JPO in Grogol Petamburan, West Jakarta, following reports that steel plates from the bridge were stolen. He noted that the issue is not isolated to this location. "Other bridges with similar characteristics have faced the same issue," said the former Banten governor.
The Jakarta Public Works Department has begun repairing the Daan Mogot pedestrian bridge, with repairs expected to be completed within one to two days.
Both Rano Karno and Governor Pramono Anung discussed the CCTV plan in response to the theft of steel plates from the Daan Mogot JPO in April. Governor Pramono suspects the plates were stolen. "We will install CCTV cameras everywhere and assign personnel to monitor them," he said at Jakarta City Hall on April 15.
According to Pramono, thefts of public facilities are a recurring issue in Jakarta. He mentioned a previous case in the Semanggi area of Central Jakarta, where streetlights in a park were allegedly stolen.
