TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The governments of Indonesia and South Korea announced the strengthening of the Special Strategic Partnership to a Special Comprehensive Strategic Partnership to realize inclusive growth and shared prosperity for both countries in the future.
"The two leaders announced the elevation of the Special Strategic Partnership to a Special Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for inclusive growth and shared prosperity in the future," according to a joint statement by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung.
The joint statement was published on the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) portal on Wednesday (April 8), following the state visit of the 8th Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto to South Korea from March 31 to April 1 at the invitation of President Lee Jae Myung.
During the state visit, Prabowo and Jae Myung announced the upgrade of the Special Strategic Partnership to the Special Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and commended the expansion of bilateral relations between the two countries in various fields, including diplomacy and security, economics, culture, people-to-people exchanges, and regional and international issues, since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1973.
The two leaders also noted that the partnership between South Korea and Indonesia has made significant contributions to regional and global peace, stability, and prosperity.
They emphasized that the Special Comprehensive Strategic Partnership will emphasize concrete and future-oriented cooperation, encompassing areas of mutual interest, both existing and new, for the benefit of both countries and the broader region.
In this regard, they also committed to working closely on the five pillars of cooperation achieved to advance their shared vision of realizing a stronger, more beneficial, and more innovative partnership, thereby enhancing the welfare and prosperity of the people of both countries.
The five pillars of cooperation include political and security cooperation; trade, investment, and industry cooperation; advanced technology, energy transition, and the green economy; and cooperation on sustainable development. socio-cultural cooperation and people-to-people exchanges; and regional and global cooperation.
In the area of political and security cooperation, Prabowo and Jae Myung pledged to further enhance high-level exchanges between the two countries, support inter-parliamentary exchange visits, and expand communication and exchanges at all levels and sectors of government to deepen mutual understanding and trust.
Regarding the pillar of trade, investment, and industry cooperation, the two leaders acknowledged that economic cooperation has been a driving force behind the mutually beneficial relationship between Indonesia and South Korea. They also pledged to further strengthen cooperation to promote private sector economic cooperation in both countries.
Prabowo and Jae Myung also committed to encouraging increased two-way investment, including quality investment that supports value creation and knowledge sharing for mutual benefit. Furthermore, they committed to expanding bilateral trade volume while emphasizing the importance of creating a stable, favorable, and predictable business environment for companies.
The two leaders expressed their commitment to enhancing cooperation in strategic economic sectors that contribute to economic growth and long-term development, including advanced manufacturing, automotive, steel, machinery, semiconductors, critical minerals and rare earth elements, shipbuilding, and the maritime industry.
In the areas of advanced technology cooperation, energy transition, and the green economy, they recognized that artificial intelligence (AI) is a universal right shared by all people and not the privilege of any particular group.
During their meeting with Prabowo and Lee Jae Myung, they also announced the "Global AI Universal Basic Society (AI-UBS) Solidarity Initiative," designed as a framework within which the fundamental rights of every individual are actively realized.
By integrating the AI ecosystems in Indonesia and South Korea, the two presidents are working to address global challenges in health, education, food security, governance, and other strategic sectors.
Under the pillar of socio-cultural cooperation and people-to-people exchanges, the two leaders underscored the importance of cultural exchanges to enhance mutual understanding and friendship between the two nations.
They reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in the fields of culture and creative industries, including the establishment and operation of the High-Level Creative Industries Cooperation Committee between the Republic of Korea's Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism (MCST) and the Republic of Indonesia's Ministry of Creative Economy.
The two leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening cooperation in education to cultivate global talents who will lead society in the future.
Regarding regional and global cooperation, Prabowo expressed his appreciation for South Korea's steadfast support for ASEAN Centrality, the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 and its Strategic Plan, and ASEAN's Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP). He also welcomed South Korea's intention to host the ASEAN-South Korea Commemorative Summit in 2029.
Prabowo and Lee Jae Myung agreed to work closely to strengthen meaningful, substantive, and mutually beneficial ASEAN-South Korea cooperation, as well as to strengthen regional cooperation to address transnational crime, a shared concern.
