TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian U-17 national team failed to advance to the semifinals of the 2025 U-17 Asian Cup after a resounding defeat against North Korea in the quarterfinals on Monday, April 14, 2025. Playing at the King Abdullah Sports City Hall Stadium in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, the Young Garuda squad conceded six goals.
North Korea led the first half of the game with 2-0, followed by four more goals in the second half.
From the live broadcast of this match, it was evident that the coach of the Indonesian U-17 national team, Nova Arianto, was shaking his head on the sidelines.
This result propelled North Korea to the semifinals of the 2025 U-17 Asian Cup. They will face Uzbekistan, who had previously beaten the United Arab Emirates with a score of 3-1 in the quarterfinals.
The heavy defeat against North Korea marked the anticlimactic end to the impressive performance displayed by the Young Garuda squad in this year’s U-17 Asian Cup. The team had previously secured a spot in the quarterfinals as the winners of Group C, thus guaranteeing a place in the 2025 U-17 World Cup.
Despite failing to advance to the semifinals, the Indonesian U-17 national team will return to the homeland with their heads held high. Evandra Florasta and his teammates have achieved their target of qualifying for the 2025 U-17 World Cup scheduled to take place in Qatar in the coming November. Indonesia is the only Southeast Asian team that will compete in the tournament.
The heavy defeat against North Korea could serve as a learning experience for the Indonesian U-17 team as they prepare to compete in the 2025 U-17 World Cup. The three previous matches in the group stage, defeating South Korea 1-0, Yemen 4-1, and Afghanistan 2-0, have also provided valuable experience for Nova's squad before taking the next step.
Match Highlight
First Half
Both teams immediately attempted to attack at the beginning of the match. In the seventh minute, the North Korean U-17 team scored through Choe Song-Hun, following a corner kick that headed towards the goal.
After conceding, the midfielder of the Indonesian U-17 team, Evandra Florasta, had a goal-scoring opportunity from a free kick in the tenth minute. However, his kick missed the target.
Three minutes later, Mierza Fijatullah launched an attack. He almost created a goal to level the score, but failed as his shot went wide.
In the 19th minute, North Korea extended their lead after the captain of the team, Kim Yu-Jin, fired a powerful shot that deflected off Mathew Baker, tricking the goalkeeper Dafa. The score changed to 2-0 in favor of Chollima.
Zahaby Gholy and his teammates continued to strive for a comeback goal. They started with a bold offense but failed to turn the tide until the end of the first half.
Second Half
The Indonesian U-17 team's goal was breached for the third time as the second half had just entered the 48th minute. Ri Kyong-Bong put his name on the scoresheet after successfully heading the ball sent by Pak Kwang-Song from the right-hand side.
In the 60th minute, the North Korean U-17 team scored their fourth goal through a penalty kick by Kim Tae-Guk. Just a minute later, Ri Kang-Rim managed to take advantage of a defensive anticipation error from the Indonesian player.
North Korea extended their lead in the 77th minute through Pak Ju Won. This goal made the score 6-0 in favor of Chollima. There were no additional goals in the remaining time, so the score remained unchanged.
