TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Communication and Digital Minister, Meutya Hafid, issued a strong warning to the company Meta regarding its low level of compliance in addressing findings of online gambling content, as well as content involving disinformation, defamation, and hate speech (DFK). "DFK content has the potential to threaten the safety of the Indonesian people if not promptly addressed," she said in a written statement on Wednesday, March 4, 2026.
Meutya delivered this stern warning during a surprise inspection of Meta's operational office in Jakarta on Wednesday, March 4, 2026. The warning was issued because Meta's platforms—Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp—are not effective at curbing the spread of online gambling, disinformation, defamation, and hate speech.
Based on the government's monitoring data, Meta's Compliance level in addressing findings of online gambling and DFK content in Indonesia is 28.47 percent. According to the Ministry of Communication and Digital, among other social media platforms operating in Indonesia, Meta has one of the lowest compliance rates.
The Ministry of Communication and Digital assesses the low compliance level as highly concerning. This is because Meta's user base in the country is one of the largest in the world. Facebook and WhatsApp each have 112 million users in the country.
Meutya stated that the platform's inability to moderate content has had serious consequences for citizen safety and could threaten the safety of the Indonesian people if not addressed promptly.
She also urged Meta to promptly strengthen content moderation systems and expedite the handling of content that violates the law. The aim is to mitigate the risks of online gambling, disinformation about health issues, digital fraud, and the increasingly prevalent sexual exploitation on the Meta platform.
The Ministry of Communication and Digital believes that the spread of disinformation not only triggers division among citizens but also weakens democracy and leads to social polarization that can endanger public order.
Article 40 of Law Number 1 of 2024 regarding ITE (Electronic Information and Transaction) gives the state the authority to prevent and address the spread of electronic information that violates the law. Meutya emphasizes that all electronic system providers operating in Indonesia are obligated to comply with national laws and ensure the security of the digital space for the public.
