TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Inter Milan failed to advance to the round of 16 of this season's Champions League after being defeated by Bodo/Glimt with a 2-5 aggregate score. The Italian club, runners-up last season, were unable to turn the game around in the second leg at the San Siro, Milan, on Wednesday morning, February 25, 2026.
Starting the match trailing 1-3 on aggregate after losing at Bodo/Glimt's home ground last week, Inter dominated the match. They recorded 70 percent possession, with 33 shots, six of which were on target.
Despite being able to pin their opponents down and maintain pressure at the San Siro, Marcus Thuram and his teammates were unable to score in the first half. The Norwegian team's tight defense made it difficult for Inter to break through.
Inter's pressure grew even more after Bodo/Glimt scored through Jens Petter Hauge in the 58th minute. He slotted the ball into the net from a rebound from Yann Sommer's save. Hauge had also scored against Inter in the first leg.
Next, after Manuel Akanji's shot hit the post, preventing Inter from equalizing in the 68th minute, Bodo/Glimt scored their second goal in the 72nd minute. Hakon Evjen fired a shot that forced Sommer to pry the ball out of the net.
Inter finally scored in the 76th minute through Alessandro Bastoni. This goal came from a corner kick. Bodo/Glimt goalkeeper Nikita Haikin managed to catch the ball, but it was already in the net.
The score remained 2-1 in Bodo/Glimt's favor until the referee blew the final whistle. With this result, Kjetil Knutsen's team advanced to the round of 16 after being on the verge of elimination with just three points from six matches, leaving them in 32nd place out of 36 teams.
Three other teams that also secured their place in the round of 16 are Atletico Madrid, who eliminated Club Brugge 7-4 on aggregate; Newcastle United, who defeated Qarabag FK 9-3, and Bayer Leverkusen, who defeated Olympiacos 2-0 on aggregate after a draw in the second leg.
With Newcastle's victory, a total of six Premier League teams competing in this season's Champions League have all advanced to the knockout stage. Five other teams had already qualified directly.
Newcastle, Atletico Madrid, Leverkusen, and Bodo/Glimt are the four latest teams to advance to the round of 16. They join Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Tottenham, Barcelona, Chelsea, Sporting CP, and Manchester City, who qualified directly after finishing in the top eight of the league standings.
The other four teams that have qualified for the round of 16 will be revealed after the second leg of the playoffs on Thursday morning WIB (Western Indonesian Time). Two other Serie A teams, Juventus and Atalanta, will be looking to turn things around in front of their home fans after losing away from home in the first leg last week.
