TEMPO.CO, Jakarta China is urging the United States to lift Iran-related sanctions imposed on its companies and nationals. "China has repeatedly stated its firm opposition to unilateral sanctions that have no basis in international law or authorization from the UN Security Council," said Ministry of Commerce Spokesperson Huang Ling at a press conference on Thursday, September 3, as quoted by ANTARA.

Even though China has repeatedly objected, Ling said that the U.S. continues to impose sanctions on its companies and nationals over alleged involvement with Iran. He added there was deep dissatisfaction and firm rejection from Beijing.

The U.S.' unilateral sanctions severely disrupt normal trade flows and economic exchanges among the countries involved. Furthermore, they also undermine global energy security and supply stability, Ling said.

China also urged the U.S. to immediately correct these wrong practices and lift sanctions on its affected companies and nationals. Ling stressed that Beijing will firmly defend the legitimate rights and interests of its companies and citizens.

Meanwhile, the U.S. announced sanctions in July against six individuals and entities in four countries, including China, for their role in supporting Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Iran's main transportation network, Mahan Air.

The U.S.'s efforts to isolate Iran from the global financial system come amid a war between the two countries since February 28.

The tensions also coincided with Chinese President Xi Jinping's reciprocal visit to the U.S., which followed President Donald Trump's visit to Beijing in May.
