TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United States has conducted 13 precision airstrikes targeting port and airport infrastructure in Hodeidah, Yemen, according to Al Masirah TV, a media outlet affiliated with the Houthi movement.

These operations came two days after a prior U.S. strike on Ras Isa Port, also located in Hodeidah.

The recent efforts, aimed at neutralizing Houthi capabilities, reportedly resulted in at least 80 fatalities and more than 150 injuries.

Al Masirah, as cited by Al Jazeera on Saturday, reported that three people were killed and four others injured in U.S. airstrikes on the districts of al-Thawra, Bani Matar, and al-Safiah in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa. In response to the continued military pressure, the Houthi group has vowed to expand its operations.

The U.S. government, under President Donald Trump, had earlier announced a large-scale military campaign against the Iran-aligned Houthi forces.

According to Washington, the strikes are intended to deter threats against commercial vessels navigating the Red Sea, one of the world’s most critical maritime trade routes.

Since November 2023, the Houthis have reportedly carried out more than 100 attacks on ships they claim are associated with Israel. These actions have been described by the group as retaliation for the conflict in Gaza and a demonstration of solidarity with the Palestinian people.

On Friday, Houthi official Mohammed Nasser al-Atifi told Al Masirah that American “crimes” would not weaken Yemeni support for Gaza. Instead, he claimed, such events would only strengthen the group’s determination and resilience.

The Houthi movement, also known as Ansar Allah or “Supporters of God,” is an armed faction that controls a significant portion of Yemen, including the capital city. Although it originated in the 1990s, the group rose to prominence in 2014 when it seized Sanaa and forced President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi into exile.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed serious concern over the U.S. airstrikes conducted on April 17 and 18 in and around the Ras Isa port.

A statement from the UN spokesperson on Saturday, April 19, 2025, noted that the strikes resulted in a significant number of civilian casualties, including injuries to five humanitarian workers. Guterres also highlighted fears of potential damage to port infrastructure and the risk of an oil spill in the Red Sea.

According to the U.S. military, the objective of the strike on Ras Isa was to cut off the Houthi group’s supply chains and funding. It marked the most lethal U.S. operation in 15 months of ongoing efforts to contain the influence of the Iran-backed group.

The United States began conducting strikes against the Houthis in January 2024, with operations intensifying under the Trump administration in a continued effort to restore security in the region and protect vital international trade routes.
