TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The savanna area of the Mount Rinjani National Park (BTNGR) has caught on fire. The fire was first spotted on Tuesday afternoon, June 2, 2026. Efforts to extinguish the fire have been made, but as of Tuesday night, the fire has not been brought under control.
Astekita Ardi, the Head of the BTNGR Administration Department, stated that based on field observations, the first fire spot was seen around 11:00 WITA, in the Savanna Provok 2 area at coordinates 50 446438 E and 9067279 S.
"The fire then spread to the Savanna Propok 1 area, which is dominated by dry savanna vegetation," said Astekita.
The Savanna Propok management group immediately made efforts to extinguish the fire by deploying 15 members who moved to the location at 13:00 WITA. The firefighting was carried out intensively until 18:00 WITA.
"However, the firefighting efforts have not successfully brought the entire fire under control due to the limited personnel, logistics, and firefighting equipment available in the field," said Astekita, "As of 19:00 WITA, the fire is still active in several parts of the affected area."
However, due to the limited lighting conditions at night and considering the safety of the personnel on duty, the firefighting activities were temporarily stopped and will be resumed on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, in the morning.
Warning to Be Vigilant During the Dry Season
Considering the increasing intensity of the dry season in the West Nusa Tenggara region, BTNGR urges the entire community, area visitors, nature tourists, farmers, herders, and hikers to be more vigilant against the potential for forest and land fires. The increasingly dry vegetation during the dry season makes the forest and savanna areas more vulnerable to fires.
"The community is expected not to engage in activities that could potentially trigger the emergence of fires, such as land clearing by burning, burning vegetative debris, discarding cigarette butts carelessly, or lighting fires without adequate supervision," said Astekita.
BTNGR also invites all elements of the community to actively participate in fire prevention efforts. "We hope that the community will promptly report to officials if they find fire spots, smoke, or indications of fires inside or around the forest areas," he added.
Forest fires often occur in the BTNGR area during the dry season. Twice in 2025, fires occurred in August and October 2025. There were no casualties, but tens of hectares of savanna area were burnt in these incidents.
