TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has appeared in the Tel Aviv District Court for the first time since he requested a pardon from President Isaac Herzog in his corruption trial.
According to Channel 12, as reported by TRT World, Netanyahu's court hearing began on Monday without the judge discussing the pardon request.
The Israeli media added that Netanyahu requested the cancellation of his trial session on Tuesday, citing diplomatic and security schedules. The judge said they would consider the request.
On Sunday, Netanyahu asked the President of Israel to grant him a pardon from the corruption charges that have been haunting him for years. The request has sparked division in Israel, as many oppose granting a pardon unless Netanyahu admits guilt and withdraws from political life.
Herzog said on Monday that he will consider what is in Israel's best interest. "The issue is clearly provoking debate and is deeply unsettling for many people in the country, across different communities," Herzog said in a statement.
Netanyahu has repeatedly sought to cancel or shorten his trial sessions. Various reasons have been cited, ranging from travel, security, politics, to Israeli military attacks in Gaza, Palestine, during the past two years.
Netanyahu, whose trial began on May 24, 2020, is the first Israeli leader to stand as a criminal defendant in the country's history. The Israeli prime minister denies all three corruption charges against him.
The Israeli Prime Minister also faces charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity. The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for him and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant in November 2024 for atrocities in Gaza, where more than 70,000 people, mostly women and children, have been killed since October 2023.
