TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Passenger car sales in Indonesia in the first quarter of 2026 (January–March) continued to be dominated by Japanese brands, although several new players are beginning to gain traction, particularly Chinese automakers.

Based on retail data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo), accessed on Tuesday, total sales reached 211,905 units during the first three months of the year.

Toyota Leads the Market, BYD Breaks Into Top Six

Toyota remained firmly in the top position with 64,416 units sold, securing a 30.4 percent market share. Monthly sales stood at 22,066 units in January, 22,812 units in February, and 19,538 units in March.

Its group partner Daihatsu ranked second with 34,653 units and a 16.4 percent share, followed by Suzuki in third place with 19,026 units (9 percent).

Mitsubishi Motors came in fourth with 18,469 units (8.7 percent), while Honda rounded out the top five with 13,001 units (6.1 percent).

Notably, Chinese electric vehicle brand BYD broke into the top six with 10,265 units and a 4.8 percent share, reflecting growing demand for electrified vehicles.

Chery's Jaecoo Surges After Market Entry

Jaecoo, a Chinese brand under the Chery group that entered the Indonesian market just five months ago, has already recorded 7,927 units (3.7 percent), placing it seventh ahead of Hyundai, which sold 4,824 units (2.3 percent).

The top 10 list is also completed by Wuling with 3,643 units (1.7 percent) and Chery with 3,433 units (1.6 percent).

Several premium brands, including BMW (644 units), Lexus (258 units), and Mercedes-Benz PC (242 units), continue to serve niche markets despite relatively small contributions to overall sales.

Meanwhile, newer entrants such as VinFast (601 units), Jetour (591 units), and Xpeng (434 units) are also beginning to establish a presence in the domestic market.

Overall, Indonesia’s passenger car market in Q1 2026 remains dominated by Japanese brands, but the growing presence of Chinese automakers, particularly in the electric vehicle segment, signals a potential shift in the competitive landscape.
