TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iran has proposed the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and an end to current hostilities while postponing nuclear negotiations to a later stage, according to media reports on Sunday.

The proposal was conveyed to the United States through mediators, including Pakistan, amid a diplomatic deadlock over Iran's nuclear program, as reported by Axios and Anadolu.

Sources indicated the plan aims to bypass the dispute over uranium enrichment in favor of a swifter agreement focused on lifting the blockade of Iranian ports and the Strait of Hormuz, alongside the restoration of maritime traffic.

Under the proposal, the ceasefire would be extended for a long period or made permanent, while nuclear talks would only commence following the reopening of the Strait and the lifting of restrictions.

A U.S. official and sources familiar with the discussions confirmed the White House has received the proposal but has not yet indicated whether it will follow up.

U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to convene a meeting in the Situation Room on Monday, April 27, 2026, with senior national security officials to discuss the stalemate and potential next steps. Trump noted he prefers maintaining the naval blockade on Iranian ports to maximize pressure on Tehran.

"When you have vast amounts of oil…if this line is closed…that line explodes from within," he remarked, adding that Iran may only have "about three days" before facing intense internal pressure.

Weekend Diplomatic Efforts

Diplomatic activity intensified over the weekend as Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held talks in Islamabad and Muscat, focusing on the Strait of Hormuz. He arrived in Saint Petersburg, Russia, on Monday morning for high-level discussions with President Vladimir Putin and other senior officials.

Araghchi stated on Monday morning, as reported by Anadolu, that his discussions in Oman centered on ensuring safe transit through the Strait of Hormuz for the benefit of regional and global interests.

In a post on X, Araghchi noted that his talks with Omani officials covered bilateral relations and regional developments, emphasizing that both nations, as littoral states, share responsibility for stability in the vital waterway.

"Our neighbors are our priority," he added. Araghchi also expressed gratitude to Omani officials, describing them as "gracious hosts."

On Sunday, Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi characterized his talks with Araghchi as "good," stressing that diplomacy and practical solutions are required to ensure sustained freedom of navigation. Albusaidi noted that littoral states recognize their shared responsibility to the international community and called for urgent humanitarian action to release long-detained sailors.

Araghchi arrived in Muscat on Saturday from Islamabad following Pakistan’s mediation efforts to facilitate an agreement between Iran and the U.S. After his Omani visit, he returned to Pakistan on Sunday for further discussions regarding a possible second round of negotiations with Washington before departing for Moscow.

Iran and the U.S. previously held talks in Islamabad on April 11-12 but failed to reach an agreement. Those negotiations followed a two-week ceasefire mediated by Pakistan on April 8, which was subsequently extended by Trump. While efforts for a new round of talks continue, the Strait of Hormuz, the U.S. blockade, and Iran’s right to enrich uranium remain key points of contention.
