Indonesia to Expand National Internship Quota by 100,000 Participants

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Finance announced a national internship program with a salary equivalent to the provincial minimum wage (UMP) for 20,000 participants across Indonesia. Febrio Kacaribu, the Director General of Economic and Fiscal Strategy at the Ministry of Finance, stated that additional job openings may be available after the government evaluates the first phase of the program.

"We have prepared up to 100,000 paid internship positions equivalent to the UMP, but we will first evaluate the initial 20 thousand. If the results are positive, we can increase the number," said Febrio, during a media gathering at the Ministry of Finance's Directorate General of Tax office in South Jakarta on Thursday, October 9, 2025.

Febrio mentioned that the UMP-paid internship program is a government breakthrough to expedite the transition of fresh graduates into the workforce. The government's goal is to help university graduates start working and contributing to the national economy quickly.

"So that their productive age is not wasted and their productivity can be immediately utilized," he said.

He explained that this program provides a wage equivalent to the UMP in each region, with companies allowed to provide higher remuneration.

He also mentioned that there is an additional approximately 3.5 million new workforce annually, including graduates and newly entered productive age population into the job market. With the UMP-paid internship program, it is hoped that a significant portion of the new workforce can be quickly absorbed.

"Many work in the informal sector, but that is not always bad. Now there is a gig economy that is actually more flexible and can generate attractive income. However, we continue to encourage the formal job market to grow and become more qualified," said Febrio.

The Ministry of Manpower previously opened registrations for the national Siap Kerja internship program on Tuesday, October 7, 2025. This program offers internships with salaries equivalent to the UMP for D3, D4, and S1 graduates. It is part of the government's 8+4+5 economic stimulus package.

The Minister of Manpower, Yassierli, explained that the quota of 20,000 participants will be proportionally distributed in each province according to the number of graduates. "The registration process is made simple, just by matching the education data that is already integrated with the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology," he said at the Wisma Danantara, Jakarta, on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.
