TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - One of the biggest challenges for passengers on long-haul flights in economy class is limited legroom, which can affect comfort and the ability to rest. Choosing the right seat can make a significant difference.
Medical travel experts at AllClear, working with Virgin Atlantic cabin crew, reveal the best and worst seats, as well as tips for sleeping during long-haul flights.
Seats over the wing
Seats located above the wing are generally recommended for those who are concerned about turbulence. Experts note that this area offers a smoother ride, as it is closest to the plane’s center of gravity. Passengers seated here tend to experience less vibration compared to seats farther back.
Avoiding the back
Passengers are advised to avoid sitting near the galley or lavatories if they want a restful flight. Limited legroom, cabin noise, seat design, and even fluctuating oxygen levels can all impact sleep quality. Night flights, busy cabin crews, and galley activity can further disturb rest, making seats in these areas less ideal.
Front and rear economy seats
Experts highlight two ideal locations in economy class for different benefits. Seats within the first five rows offer advantages such as priority meal service, quicker disembarkation, and reduced turbulence impact.
Similarly, seats within the last five rows allow passengers to receive meals promptly since cabin crew serve from both ends simultaneously, though turbulence is more noticeable at the rear.
Extra amenities
Passengers may not always realize the additional amenities available on long-haul flights. Some areas of the aircraft contain facilities such as snacks, eye masks, or extra socks that can enhance comfort.
In premium class, luxury snack boxes are often provided, while economy passengers can also access hidden treats typically located in the galley.
By strategically selecting seats and being aware of available amenities, passengers can improve comfort and enjoy a more pleasant long-haul flight experience, even in economy class.
