Indonesia, France Forge Partnership for Sustainable Mining Practices

14 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Agence Francaise de Developpement (AFD) and the French Bureau of Geological and Mining Research (BRGM) collaborate with the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) and Badan Geologi on sustainable and post-mining best practices. A seminar was hosted in Jakarta from April 22-24, 2025, to foster dialogue between Indonesia and French stakeholders in promoting responsible mining practices.

AFD implements the Indonesia Energy Transition Facility (IETF), AFD’s 14,7 euros grant programme with the European Union, to support the Indonesian government in improving environmental and social governance of its extractive industries. As the world’s largest nickel and cobalt reserves, Indonesia must improve sustainability and reduce social and ecological impacts.

Director of Mineral and Coal Programme Development of the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Julian Ambassadur, mentioned that the seminar aims to provide an overview of best practices in mining management, environmental remediation, and mining waste valorization, while introducing data management. “Today’s seminar is a reflection of our collective commitment and the potential for achieving success through collaboration”, he said.

Nurrahman Waluyo, project officer for the Energy sector at the AFD office in Jakarta, added that the seminar strengthens the Indonesian institutions' capacity in creating opportunities for dialogue and mutual learning. “AFD is willing to support Indonesia in managing its mineral resources more sustainably,” he said.

Additionally, the seminar covered environmental and social risk management throughout the mine lifecycle, mine closure, governance mechanisms, and waste valorization. BRGM’s experts presented French practices and lessons learned in front of 20 participants from MEMR, the Indonesian Ministry of Environment, the Indonesian Mining Association, and regional governments.

“Indonesia’s approach to reducing the environmental impacts of mining relies on an integrated risk reduction methodology applied across the entire value chain”, concluded Olivier Frézot, Area Manager for Asia in BRGM.
