TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck Argentina on Friday morning, May 2, 2025, local time, or Friday evening WIB. The earthquake occurred precisely at 07:58 PM WIB, with its epicenter located south of Ushuaia, near Cape Horn.

According to data shared by BMKG, the epicenter was in the sea, but it was not enough to trigger a tsunami. The earthquake's depth was 19 kilometers. "It was a shallow earthquake caused by the subduction of the Antarctic Plate," said Daryono, Director of Earthquake and Tsunami at BMKG.

By 09:00 PM WIB, there had been three aftershocks with the largest magnitude of 5.7. The intensity of the tremors reached a VI MMI scale (shaking felt by all, wall plaster falling, and light damage occurring)

"This earthquake did not affect seismic activity in Indonesia," Daryono added.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake in Argentina had a magnitude of 7.4 but with much stronger shaking intensity, reaching an VIII MMI scale. The epicenter was 219 kilometers south of Ushuaia, Argentina.

On the VIII MMI scale, the earthquake caused damage to buildings with strong construction, cracks in poorly built structures, walls separating from the house frame, factory chimneys and monuments collapsing, and water turning murky.
