TEMPO.CO, JakartaA pedestrian-friendly city can make it easier for tourists to explore interesting places. Time Out has released a list of walkable cities in the world, according to a survey of 18,500 people worldwide, asking how easy it is to get around on foot.

Walkable cities give tourists easier access to cultural venues, restaurants, or even hidden cafes while getting their steps in for the day.

Pedestrian-friendly streets also foster a stronger community and serve businesses, as well as help preserve the environment. European cities such as Paris and London have taken steps to reduce traffic in certain areas to help lower emissions. Paris, for example, plans to ban cars on 500 more streets besides the French capital.

The most walkable city in Time Out’s list is Abu Dhabi, with a majority of it being flat terrains and plenty of walkable areas near the city center.

The Corniche Beach overlooks the Arabian Gulf all the way to Al Lulu Island, and features an 8-kilometer-long promenade with children's play areas, restaurants, and expansive views. It is no wonder that 91 percent of the locals find the city easy to navigate on foot.

There are plenty of attractions for tourists to explore in Abu Dhabi. Outside the city, magnificent desert landscapes and lush green oases are open for exploration. From relaxing on the edge of Saadiyat Island to getting an adrenaline rush at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, tourists can spend hours on Yas Island, home to the world's largest indoor amusement park. Nature enthusiasts can visit the beautiful Mangrove National Park, the wildlife of Sir Bani Yas Island, and the sand dunes of the Empty Quarter.

In second place is Boston. A high 89 percent of locals gave a positive rating to the city’s walkability. Not only are Boston's main attractions close to each other, but many can be reached on foot.

On the Freedom Trail, a 4-kilometer stroll will connect 16 significant historical sites of the United States. The Freedom Trail is an iconic symbol of Boston, with its red brick line winding through some of the oldest parts of the city, leading visitors to some of the most important historical sites in Downtown, North End, and Charlestown.

Third place goes to Brighton, Sussex, England. Despite the city's hilly terrain, 88 percent of the population described its walkability as “good” or “amazing.” The city's three main attractions, the Royal Pavilion, Brighton Palace Pier, and North Laine, are all within a five-minute walk. Additionally, the best pubs, bars, and restaurants in the city are all within the same small radius.

Here is the complete list of the 20 most walkable cities according to Time Out:

  1. Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
    2. Boston, United States
    3. Brighton, United Kingdom
