TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Apple TV’s horror-comedy series Widow’s Bay went from a relatively low-profile debut in April to becoming the biggest winner at the 2026 Emmy Awards, taking home 14 awards from 19 nominations.
The series won six awards during the September 14 telecast, including outstanding comedy series, outstanding writing for a comedy series and outstanding directing for a comedy series. Its stars Matthew Rhys, Stephen Root and Kate O’Flynn also won acting awards.
Those six wins came after Widow’s Bay collected eight awards at the Creative Arts Emmy ceremonies on September 6, bringing its total Emmy haul this year to 14.
With 14 wins, Widow’s Bay became the most-awarded comedy series in a single Emmy season, surpassing the record of 13 set by another Apple TV series, The Studio, in 2025.

So, what is Widow’s Bay, and what made the series stand out at this year’s Emmys? Here’s what to know about the series, based on reports by ABC News and TheWrap.
1. It Follows a Mayor on a Possibly Haunted Island
Widow’s Bay is set on a fictional island off the coast of New England, where residents have long believed that their home is cursed.
Matthew Rhys plays Tom Loftis, the island’s mayor, who wants to turn the quiet community into a tourist destination similar to Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard. His plans become complicated when old local legends begin to come true as tourists start arriving.
“After decades of calm, the old stories that seemed too ludicrous to be true start happening again,” Apple says in its description of the series.
The first season consists of 10 episodes, with episodes running between 31 and 48 minutes. The full season is now available to stream on Apple TV.
2. It Blends Horror With Comedy
The series combines character-driven comedy with supernatural horror, shifting between deadpan humor, unsettling moments and more conventional scares.
Rhys said he both laughed and felt frightened when he first read the script.
The show draws on several horror traditions, including supernatural horror, folk horror and slasher elements. Creator Katie Dippold has also cited films such as Jaws and Halloween as influences.
The combination has helped the series stand out. Critics have variously described it as a grown-up take on Stranger Things, a “spooky but cozy” horror series and a character comedy that can turn genuinely unsettling.
Rhys has also said filming some of the show’s underwater scenes was particularly frightening. During one shoot, he asked the dive team about great white sharks in the area and was told that they could be present.
3. It Took Nearly 20 Years to Make
Despite its rapid rise at the Emmys, Widow’s Bay was nearly two decades in the making.
Dippold, whose previous credits include Parks & Recreation and the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot, first developed the idea around 18 years ago. The concept was partly inspired by her childhood in New Jersey, where she and her friends visited places they believed were haunted.
“I would be so giddy going out on a summer night because I knew I was going to be scared, but we would also laugh, and it was very communal,” Dippold told TheWrap.
An early version of the pilot eventually helped Dippold land a writing job on Parks & Recreation. She later reworked the project because she felt the original version leaned too heavily on comedy.
“It felt like a parody, and I wanted Widow’s Bay to feel like a very real place in a real world,” she said. “As a horror fan, I want the tension and the stakes to be taken seriously.”
4. Widow’s Bay Is Fictional
Despite its detailed New England setting, Widow’s Bay does not exist. Dippold has deliberately kept the island’s exact location vague, saying she wanted to capture the atmosphere and character of New England rather than tie the story to a specific place.
“It’s a long ferry ride, you don’t know exactly if the ferry comes from Massachusetts or Maine, but I purposely wanted to keep that a little vague,” she told The Boston Globe.
Much of the series was filmed in Massachusetts, including Worcester, Gloucester and Rockport.
Rhys said the region’s history and atmosphere helped shape the series.
“You immediately have this kind of mythical mysticism surrounding it,” he said. “That New England history so perfectly lent to this piece. Once we shot there, it just enriched it tenfold.”
5. Matthew Rhys Had a Record-Breaking Emmy Night
Rhys had an especially notable night at the 2026 Emmys. He won outstanding lead actor in a comedy series for Widow’s Bay and also won the same category for The Beast in Me, making him the first actor to win two lead acting Emmys for different shows in the same year.
He also collected a third Emmy as an executive producer of Widow’s Bay.
For Dippold, the series’ Emmy success came after years of uncertainty about whether it would ever reach television. When accepting the outstanding comedy series award, she thanked Apple for taking a chance on the project.
“Thank you, Apple, for letting us take this crazy, creative swing,” Dippold said. “They truly just let us do this weird show, and we can’t thank you enough.”
