TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Emergency Flood Crisis Operation Center (EFCOC) announced on Monday, December 1, that it will provide 2 million baht (approximately Rp1 billion) in immediate compensation to the families of flood victims in Songkhla, Thailand.
The Nation Thailand reported that the aid will be issued without additional paperwork.
The decision was made following a noon meeting at the Thailand's Government House chaired by government and EFCOC spokesperson Siripong Angkasakulkiat.
Siripong explained that the compensation applies only to fatalities in Songkhla, which is the only province declared under a state of emergency.
Families of deceased victims in other southern provinces will continue to receive support under the standard regulations of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM).
He also stated that Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul instructed EFCOC to remove unnecessary bureaucratic steps after visiting flood-hit communities in Hat Yai and listening to residents’ concerns.
Eligibility will instead be verified using a digital flood map and household registration data from the Provincial Administration Department. This means flood victims are no longer required to present physical documents.
However, during the first two days after floodwaters receded, local authorities had not yet received updated instructions from the central government. This led some offices to continue requesting identity cards and household records from affected families.
Siripong said the prime minister also ordered DDPM to expedite the distribution of relief funds. Songkhla families are eligible for the full 2 million baht, while compensation amounts for other provinces will be determined by EFCOC.
Government doctors will assess whether deaths caused by flood-related complications can qualify for compensation under a special assistance scheme.
The government has additionally instructed agencies to accelerate the repair of essential infrastructure. Tap water services in Hat Yai are expected to be fully restored by Wednesday.
