TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's U-23 national team lost to the Philippines' Azkals youth team 1-0 in the first Group C match of the 2025 SEA Games. The match took place at the 700th Anniversary Stadium, Chiang Mai, Thailand, on Monday, December 8, 2025.
This result has qualified the Philippines for the men's football semifinals at the 2025 SEA Games. Before defeating Indonesia, the Philippines also secured a 2-0 victory over Myanmar. The young Garuda squad will have to play a must-win match against Myanmar on Friday, December 12, 2025, while hoping to qualify for the semifinals as the best second-place team in the group stage.
Match Highlights
In this match, Indonesian coach Indra Sjafri fielded goalkeeper Cahya Supriadi. In front of him, four defenders stood, namely Muhammad Ferarri, Kadek Arel, Dion Markx, and Dony Pamungkas.
In the midfield, Indra placed Ivar Jenner, Rivaldo Pakpahan, and Raka Cahyana. The three supported the front line, consisting of Rayhan Hannan and Rafael Struick, who flanked the forward Mauro Zijlstra.
The Philippine national team pressed the Indonesian defensive line since the start of the first half. This situation made it difficult for the Indonesian youth squad to build an attack. The duel between the two teams was mostly concentrated in the midfield.
Neither team created clear scoring opportunities in the first 25 minutes. The Filipino players maintained their playing space with discipline while waiting for a chance to launch a counterattack. Meanwhile, the Indonesian players struggled to find openings in the Azkals' youth team defense.
In the 27th minute, an opportunity arose for Indonesia. Goalkeeper Nicholas Guimaraes made an important save by deflecting Muhammad Ferrari's long-range shot. This opportunity only resulted in a corner kick.
In the 34th minute, Rivaldo Pakpahan also had a chance. He received a piercing pass from Ivar Jenner. However, his long-range shot outside the penalty box still flew over the right side of Guimares' goal. He also had a similar chance in the 42nd minute.
Indonesia was caught off guard in the last minute of injury time. A throw-in from Gabriel Guimares went into the penalty box. Otu Banatao successfully tucked the ball into Cahya's goal. At halftime, the Philippines were leading 1-0.
Second Half
Coach Indra Sjafri made changes in the second half. He brought in Robi Darwis and Rahmat Arjuna to replace Rayhan Hannan and Raka Cahyana. These changes increased Indonesia's playing intensity.
In the 51st minute, Rahmat had an opportunity to score the equalizer. Without marking and under no pressure from the opposing players, he received the ball inside the penalty box. However, his shot was too strong and flew high.
The Philippines had an opportunity to double their lead in the 55th minute through Sandro Reyes. He unleashed a long-range shot, but the ball still deviated to the right side of Cahya's goal.
In the 57th minute, Struick failed to capitalize on a free kick in front of the Philippine penalty box. However, his shot still flew high. After that, Indra Sjafri made another substitution. To strengthen the midfield, he brought in Toni Firmansyah and withdrew Dion Markx.
Until the 75th minute, the Filipino players maintained a solid defensive scheme, and Indonesia consistently failed to move the ball. This situation made it difficult for the Garuda squad to create clear opportunities.
Indra Sjafri tried his luck by bringing in Frengky Missa and Hokky Caraka to replace Rafael Struick and Rivaldo Pakpahan. The sporadic attacks from the Indonesian national team were not enough to break the Philippines' defense.
No opportunities were created during the five minutes of injury time. The score of 1-0 held until the final whistle.
