TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Russian government welcomed the newly released security strategy of the United States on December 4. The document marks a major shift in Washington's foreign policy orientation, including a focus on strategic stability with Moscow, which was not prominent in U.S. strategy since the annexation of Crimea in 2014.
Quoted by Al Jazeera, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov on Sunday, December 7, stated, "The changes correspond in many ways to our vision." He also welcomed the part that calls for an end to the perception that NATO is always an expanding alliance. For decades, Russia has opposed NATO expansion for national security reasons.
Peskov said that the adjustments made by Washington could be a guarantee to continue cooperation in seeking a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine.
Quoted from Politico, Peskov assessed that the Trump administration is fundamentally different from its predecessor, and referred to Trump as a strong figure capable of changing the U.S. foreign policy orientation. However, he cautioned that officials in Washington may not fully support the new strategy.
U.S. Shift in the Midst of Peace Efforts
Since 2022, the U.S. has referred to Russia as a destabilizing power since the end of the Cold War. However, Trump's new document no longer positions Moscow as an enemy. Trump had even previously referred to Russian President Vladimir Putin as a friend. This shift comes as the White House is pushing for a crucial stage in the peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will travel to London on Monday for a four-party meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
Zelensky continues to seek strong support from Europe, particularly amid statements by some U.S. officials that Kyiv should consider territorial concessions in negotiations.
Implications for Europe and NATO
The strategy document warns Europe of the risk of migration pressure and questions whether some European countries can be reliable NATO members in the long term.
The alliance, formed in the late 1940s to confront the Soviet Union, is once again in the spotlight due to its eastward expansion, which is often seen as triggering tensions with Moscow.
