TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a Magnitude 7.6 earthquake in Japan tonight, Monday, December 8, 2025. Centered at sea, 73 kilometers northeast of Misawa, Japan, the earthquake occurred at 21:15 WIB (Western Indonesia Time) or 23:15 local time, triggering a tsunami warning.
The earthquake's epicenter was recorded at a depth of 53.1 kilometers. The strongest tremor registered up to a VII on the MMI scale, meaning it could have caused people to rush out of their homes. The tremor could cause damage to well-built houses and structures.
Quoted by the Japan Times, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued an early tsunami warning of up to three meters on the northeastern coast of Japan. The tsunami warning covers the Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate prefectures. It is also mentioned that the earthquake's epicenter is located east of Aomori Prefecture.
