TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's rupiah opens stronger by 7 points or 0,04 percent at Rp16,568 per U.S. dollar today, Tuesday, October 21, 2025.
Currency analyst at Doo Financial Futures, Lukman Leong, predicts the rupiah exchange rate to continue strengthening as the meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping approaches.
"The rupiah is expected to strengthen against the U.S. dollar amid investors' hopes for reduced tension between China and the United States, as the two parties are set to meet soon," he says in Jakarta on Tuesday, as quoted from Antara.
Citing Anadolu, Trump said earlier he would meet the President of China in South Korea, with the hope of reaching a fair deal with Beijing.
The President of the United States hopes to reach a fair deal with Beijing after the meeting.
"I believe after we leave South Korea ... we're going to have a very good relationship with China," he said, adding that he has been invited to visit China and plans to do so in early 2026.
"Trump assured investors and said everything will be fine. The discussion is very broad, especially concerning rare minerals. So, there is little chance of any significant breakthrough or deal, but investors are quite happy if there is no escalation," said Lukman.
Reviewing other sentiments, investors are currently adopting a 'wait and see' approach in anticipation of the Board of Governors Meeting of Bank Indonesia (BI) on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, and U.S. inflation data at the end of this week.
Based on these factors, rupiah is estimated to park in the range of Rp16,500 to Rp16,600 per U.S. dollar.
