The Charms of Umbria, Italy's Most Underrated Luxury Destination

8 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - There is a score of overlooked cities across Italy, despite the similar luxuries they offer compared to other iconic towns in the country. One of them is Umbria, located between Tuscany and Lazio in central Italy. The city was recently named the most underrated, luxurious summer holiday destination in Europe by CV Villas, a London-based travel agency.

The travel agency compiled the list based on an analysis of travel reviews for tourist attractions in 50 lesser-visited European destinations. According to the analysis, Umbria topped the list, as reported by Travel and Leisure Asia.

Umbria: A luxurious destination off the beaten path

According to CV Villas, Umbria has been dubbed the “New Tuscany” in recent years. It remains off the radar yet retains its rustic charm. The region is ideal for travelers seeking a peaceful atmosphere away from the crowds.

“Umbria is proof that underrated destinations in Europe provide authentic experiences away from typical tourist trails,” the travel agency stated in a press release.

Following Umbria, the surfing town of Biarritz, France, ranks second. Biarritz is located along the Basque coast in southwestern France and features long sandy beaches, surfing schools, and the iconic Rocher de la Vierge rock formation. Other French cities on the list include Brittany, Antibes, Bordeaux, Montpellier, and Occitanie.

Other Italian cities on the list include Emilia-Romagna, Taormina, and Puglia.

What Umbria has to offer

Umbria is often referred to as the “green heart” of Italy. Though less well-known than its neighboring regions, it is no less enchanting. There are several hidden-gem towns with their own unique charm, such as Assisi, Spello, and Montefalco. These towns often feature centuries-old Roman architecture, delicious local cuisine, and piazzas that remain the heart of daily life.

As quoted from Lonely Planet, Umbria is rich in culture, from medieval hilltop towns to beautiful churches, archaeological sites, and contemporary art exhibitions. The region also hosts various celebrations and festivals highlighting food, music, art, and history, attracting visitors from around the world to central Italy.

Umbria also offers outdoor experiences for all types of travelers. From dense forests and green meadows, towering mountains and pristine lakes, to the highest peaks and deepest caves. Hikers can explore the Monti Sibillini National Park, part of the Apennine Mountains range. Meanwhile, in the north lies the Monte Cucco Regional Park, which offers a variety of activities ranging from hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking to paragliding and cross-country skiing.
