TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chelsea maintained their perfect start to the Premier League season with a 4-3 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion at Stamford Bridge, but the entertaining win exposed defensive weaknesses that manager Xabi Alonso must address.

Emiliano Martinez made his Chelsea debut just hours after his move from Aston Villa was confirmed, but the Argentina goalkeeper could not prevent Brighton from scoring three times as Chelsea surrendered a three-goal lead.

According to The Guardian, Chelsea raced into a 3-0 advantage inside 32 minutes before Brighton fought back and turned the match into a tense finish. Cole Palmer eventually restored Chelsea's control with 16 minutes remaining, although Pascal Gross scored a late consolation for Brighton.

Martinez, who joined Chelsea for £7.5 million, was handed an immediate starting role despite having only recently completed the move. The 33-year-old had trained with his new teammates before the transfer was officially confirmed and declared himself ready to play.

"I am happy with his first impact," Alonso said after the match. "He has been in the building for 48 hours so now we will have the whole week to prepare for the next one."

Chelsea opened the scoring in the fourth minute when Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen's handling error allowed Romeo Lavia to finish after Mats Wieffer had cleared a Joao Pedro header off the line.

Pedro Neto doubled the advantage in the 14th minute after Morgan Rogers surged forward and created the opportunity. Joao Pedro then made it 3-0 when he finished after another impressive move involving Rogers and Jorrel Hato.

Brighton responded before halftime through Malick Yalcouye, who scored after Martinez made a brave block from Charalampos Kostoulas.

The visitors continued to threaten after the break. Joao Pedro inadvertently turned a Gross cross into his own net, reducing Chelsea's lead to 3-2 before Palmer restored the two-goal cushion with a curling finish.

Gross struck again deep into stoppage time, but Chelsea held on for their second consecutive league victory.

Despite the win, the defensive performance highlighted problems that go beyond the arrival of Martinez.

As reported by BBC Sport, Chelsea have now conceded five goals in their opening two Premier League matches while scoring seven. They have also gone 18 games without keeping a clean sheet, their longest such run since the 1960s.

Martinez was not directly responsible for any of Brighton's three goals, but he acknowledged that Chelsea must improve defensively.

"The front three is amazing. When we go forward, we can hurt teams," Martinez told Sky Sports. "At the back, we need to bring the goals down."

The goalkeeper's arrival has also effectively ended Robert Sanchez's spell as Chelsea's first choice. Sanchez was left out of the squad against his former club and is now reportedly available for transfer.

Alonso was reluctant to discuss Sanchez's future, saying only: "We will see. Sometimes you have to take tough decisions."

Martinez's experience could nevertheless prove valuable. The Argentine has won two FIFA Best Goalkeeper awards, helped Argentina win the 2022 World Cup and played a key role in Aston Villa's Europa League triumph last season.

"He is a brilliant signing," former Premier League goalkeeper Shay Given told BBC Sport, praising Alonso for immediately putting his new goalkeeper into the starting lineup.

Chelsea's attacking form, meanwhile, has provided plenty of encouragement. Palmer, Joao Pedro and Rogers have quickly developed into an exciting combination, with Palmer looking particularly sharp after an extended break during the summer.

The Guardian noted that Chelsea's attacking threat has been especially effective in transition, despite their limited possession. Against Brighton, Chelsea had just 25.9 percent possession and completed only 146 passes, according to BBC Sport.

The midfield also remains an area of concern. Moises Caicedo was forced off shortly after coming on, while Enzo Fernandez missed his second consecutive match amid reported interest from Manchester City.

Chelsea are expected to remain active before Tuesday's transfer deadline, with Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara among the players they are considering.

For Alonso, the immediate priority is finding greater control and defensive stability. Chelsea have already demonstrated that they can score heavily under their new manager, but their next test will be whether they can maintain their advantage when facing stronger opposition.

That challenge arrives quickly, with Chelsea set to visit Arsenal next Sunday.
