TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - More than 15 million people reported experiencing health problems during the recent heat waves in the United Kingdom, according to research released by the End Fuel Poverty Coalition on Wednesday, July 8.
The research showed that 28 percent of adults in the United Kingdom reported that they felt unwell due to extreme heat. Furthermore, 47 percent of respondents with financial difficulties or very difficult circumstances and 44 percent of people with disabilities said they experienced health problems due to high temperatures, according to the research.
Meanwhile, 65 percent of adults in the United Kingdom said they were concerned that heat waves would become more frequent and severe in the country as a result of climate change.
"The risk is made worse for households with poor ventilation or no ability to implement passive cooling measures. And the risk is also heightened for people who are simply unable to afford to run fans and air conditioners to keep their homes cool," said Simon Francis, coordinator of the End Fuel Poverty Coalition, as quoted from Antara, citing Xinhua.
The UK-based End Fuel Poverty Coalition is a coalition of more than 100 anti-poverty, health, housing and environmental campaign groups, charities, local authorities, trade unions and consumer organisations.
Meanwhile, The Guardian reported that the heat waves in England have left two in three people struggling to sleep at night. The mass sleep deprivation resulted in nearly half of people losing at least three hours of sleep every night.
