TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The legendary actress Diane Keaton passed away at the age of 79 in California, United States, on Saturday, October 11, 2025. She was known for her roles in the films The Godfather, Annie Hall, Father of the Bride, and The First Wives Club.
"No further details are available at this time, and her family has requested privacy during this time of profound sadness," a family spokesperson told People.
The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) confirmed that they responded to a call from Diane Keaton's home at 8:08 a.m. local time and transported a 79-year-old woman to a local hospital. TMZ also reported that the actress was taken from her home to the hospital at around 8 a.m. before being pronounced dead.
Early Life and Journey to Broadway
Diane Keaton was born in Los Angeles on January 5, 1946, with the birth name Diane Hall. She was the eldest of four siblings, with her father being a civil engineer and her mother a homemaker. In her interview with People in 2004, Diane Keaton remembered her mother as a deeply inspiring figure. "Deep down in her heart, she may have wanted to be an entertainer in any form," she said.
Diane Keaton appeared in drama productions since high school and continued her drama studies after graduating in 1964 but dropped out early to move to New York and pursue a career in theater. As there was already another Diane Hall in Actors' Equity, she used her mother's name, Keaton, as her stage name.
In 1968, Diane Keaton appeared on Broadway in Hair as a replacement. However, during that time, she also struggled with bulimia, an eating disorder that she openly discussed with People in 2017. She eventually recovered through therapy.
Joining The Godfather
Diane Keaton's film career began with Lovers and Other Strangers (1970). However, her breakthrough came when Francis Ford Coppola chose her as Kay Adams in The Godfather (1972). She admitted to not having read Mario Puzo's novel before the audition. "I didn't know anything... I just went around for an audition," she told People in 2022.
The Godfather was a huge success and won the Best Picture at the Oscars. Keaton then reprised her role in The Godfather Part II (1974) and Part III (1990).
Legendary Collaboration with Woody Allen
Keaton worked with Woody Allen on several projects, including Play It Again, Sam (1972), Sleeper (1973), and Love and Death (1975). However, their peak collaboration came through Annie Hall (1977), where Diane Keaton won the Oscar for Best Actress.
Aside from Annie Hall, Diane Keaton starred in influential films such as Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1977), Reds (1981), Baby Boom (1987), and Father of the Bride (1991). She also appeared in The First Wives Club (1996) alongside Goldie Hawn and Bette Midler, as well as Something's Gotta Give (2003) which earned her another Oscar nomination. Her subsequent roles include Because I Said So, The Family Stone, Book Club (and its sequel), Poms, and appearances in the series The Young Pope (2016).
Keaton as a Director and Writer
In addition to acting, Diane Keaton was also active as a director. She directed the documentary film Heaven (1987), Hanging Up (2000), and an episode of Twin Peaks. Diane Keaton was also a prolific writer, publishing the memoirs Then Again (2011), Let's Just Say It Wasn't Pretty (2015), and Brother and Sister (2020). She was also known as a photographer and a preserver of historical buildings.
In 2017, Diane Keaton received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Film Institute. Woody Allen, who presented her with the award, jokingly remarked that Diane Keaton "looked like the woman in A Streetcar Named Desire who came to take Blanche away." Instead of giving a speech, Keaton sang the song "Seems Like Old Times" from Annie Hall, reminiscing about the moment that made her a Hollywood legend.
Personal Life
Diane Keaton never married. In an interview with People in 2019, she said, "I'm so glad I didn't get married. I'm weird."
She had relationships with Woody Allen, Al Pacino, and Warren Beatty, but chose to focus on her career and small family. Diane Keaton adopted two children, Dexter in 1996 and Duke in 2001. "Becoming a mother was not an overwhelming urge but something I thought about for a long time. So I acted on it right away," she told Ladies' Home Journal in 2008.
