TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The permanent representative of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) on Thursday met with Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, where both parties pledged to strengthen their relationship, according to the Japanese Foreign Ministry.
As reported by Antara, during the meeting in Tokyo, Motegi emphasized that the security of the Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific regions is “inseparable.” He also said that cooperating with allies and like-minded countries is becoming more important.
According to the statement, the two sides exchanged views on Russia, the war in Ukraine, challenges in the Indo-Pacific region related to China, North Korea's nuclear and missile programs, military cooperation between Russia and North Korea, and developments in the Middle East, including the situation in Iran.
Representatives from NATO recognized the growing importance of Japan-NATO cooperation and expressed their intention to strengthen relations further.
A NATO delegation arrived in Japan on Wednesday, one of the U.S.'s oldest allies in the Asia-Pacific region. Japan hosts more than 50,000 U.S. troops, as well as bases and other military assets.
Last week, Japan's public broadcaster NHK reported that approximately 30 NATO ambassadors were expected to meet with Japanese cabinet ministers to discuss issues such as how to handle China's strengthened military ties with Russia.
The last time NATO representatives visited Tokyo was in 2023. After Japan, the delegation will visit South Korea.
