Jakarta Forecasts 10,000-12,000 Newcomers After Eid

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Jakarta provincial government estimates that the number of post-Eid arrivals in the capital will decline again in 2026, continuing a downward trend seen in recent years.

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said the number of newcomers after the Eid holiday is projected at around 10,000 to 12,000 people, lower than in previous years.

“The number of post-Eid newcomers is estimated at around 10,000 to 12,000 people. This shows that economic development is becoming more evenly distributed across various regions,” Pramono said on Tuesday, March 17, 2026.

According to Pramono, the trend marks a shift from previous years, when Jakarta remained the main destination for job seekers from across the country.

He said economic opportunities are now increasingly spread across multiple regions, slowing the pace of urban migration to the capital.

Still, the Jakarta administration will not restrict people from moving to the city. Instead, it is urging prospective newcomers to come prepared, both in terms of job skills and financial readiness, so they do not add to the city’s social burden.

The number of newcomers to Jakarta has fallen sharply in recent years. In 2023, the city recorded 395,298 arrivals. That figure dropped significantly to 84,783 in 2024. In 2025, the number was estimated at between 10,000 and 15,000 people.

Pramono made the projection ahead of the departure of Jakarta’s free Eid homecoming, or mudik, program organized by the provincial government. A total of 33,902 participants departed from the National Monument (Monas) area in Central Jakarta to various destinations.

The number of participants rose by around 34 percent compared with the previous year. The provincial government said the increase reflects strong public demand for safe and affordable transportation during the annual Eid travel season.

To support the program, the Jakarta administration deployed 744 buses with a total capacity of more than 35,000 passengers. It also provided motorcycle transport services to reduce the risk of road accidents among travelers who would otherwise make the trip on two-wheeled vehicles.

The 2026 free homecoming program serves 20 cities and regencies across six provinces: Lampung, South Sumatra, West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, and East Java.

Pramono said all vehicles had undergone roadworthiness inspections, while drivers were required to be in good health and free from drug use.
