Prabowo's Mediation Offer Communicated to Both the US, Iran

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono said he has communicated with both the United States and Iran regarding Indonesia’s offer to mediate the escalating conflict between the two countries.

“I have communicated with both parties, the US and Iran,” Sugiono said at the Presidential Palace complex in Jakarta on Tuesday night, March 3, 2026.

However, he noted that neither side has made a decision on Indonesia’s proposal. According to Sugiono, both Washington and Tehran are still assessing developments on the ground.

“We will wait and see how it goes, as they have said they will assess the situation in the coming days and weeks,” he said.

Sugiono, a politician from the Gerindra Party, said he directly conveyed Indonesia’s intention to mediate during a phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. During the conversation, Sugiono expressed regret over the failed negotiations that contributed to the escalation.

He added that President Prabowo Subianto aims to help de-escalate tensions and promote stability in the Gulf region.

“These are also views that he (Araghchi) accepted,” Sugiono said.

Sugiono emphasized that Indonesia’s offer to serve as a mediator depends on the consent of both Iran and the United States. He acknowledged that the Iranian Embassy in Jakarta had suggested mediation with Washington might not significantly alter the situation.

“As stated, if both parties are willing, President Prabowo is ready to mediate. But if there are different views, we leave it to them,” he said.

Sugiono reiterated that Indonesia stands ready to act as a bridge between the two sides.

“Indonesia wants to position itself as a bridge between differences, offering our readiness to help,” he said.

Previously, Iran’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Mohammad Boroujerdi, expressed appreciation for Indonesia’s initiative but said there had been no further communication on the proposal.

Speaking at his official residence in Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Monday, March 2, 2026, Boroujerdi said Tehran has not yet assessed whether mediation would affect the evolving conflict dynamics and declined to predict its potential success.

“Whether mediation can produce results in a situation like this, I cannot answer. But communication and interaction among senior officials of both governments are certainly possible,” he said.
