TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iran has confirmed the death of the head of the Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, after an Israeli air strike, DW reported. Tehran says Larijani, his son, and several bodyguards died in the attack on Tuesday.
Previously, Israel said it killed Larijani along with the commander of the Revolutionary Guard's Basij militia, Gholamreza Soleimani.
The council called him a "righteous servant" who achieved "the grace of martyrdom," praising Larijani’s decades of service.
As reported by Al Jazeera, the Iranian Supreme National Security Council confirmed the assassination of its secretary, Ali Larijani.
“After a lifetime of striving for the elevation of Iran and the Islamic Revolution, he finally reached his long-cherished wish, answered the call of truth, and proudly attained the blessed rank of martyrdom in the service front,” read a statement from the council, as carried by Iran’s semi-official Mehr news.
The news came after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) confirmed Soleimani’s killing.
On Friday, Larijani attended an Al-Quds Day rally in support of Palestinians in Tehran, along with President Masoud Pezeshkian. He was last seen publicly that day.
Since Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei died on February 28, Larijani had been seen as one of the most powerful figures in Iran.
For years, he has held a prominent role within Iran’s political establishment, including a period when he led the country’s nuclear negotiations with Western powers. He also previously served as speaker of Iran’s parliament.
