Indonesia Transfers Dozens of High-Risk Inmates to Nusakambangan Prison Island

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Dozens of high-risk inmates from Jakarta have been transferred to the Nusakambangan prison island. The inmates are placed in different have been placed in different correctional facilities.

"41 high-risk inmates from the Jakarta region arrived at Nusakambangan this morning, around 5:30 a.m.," said Mardi Santoso, Head of the Central Java Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections at the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections, in an official statement on Monday, October 13, 2025.

He explained that a total of 15 individuals were placed in Karang Anyar Prison, five in Pasir Putih Prison, eight in Besi Prison, 12 in Ngaseman Prison, and one in Permisan Prison. "Their administrative and physical examination are deemed complete," said Mardi. 

Subsequently, the inmates will be supervised and secured based on their assessment results. There are specific objectives to be achieved by transferring the high-risk inmates to Nusakambangan.

First, to protect the previous prisons and penitentiaries from all kinds of violations and contraband items, such as electronic devices and drugs.

The transfer, according to Mardi, is also intended to "change the behaviour of these high-risk inmates," which lines up with the objectives of the Correctional Services. "Thus, upon completing their sentences, they can become law-abiding citizens and not become repeat offenders," he said.

Head of the Jakarta Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections at the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections, Heri Azhari, said the transfer process was carried out in collaboration with correctional officers, the personnel of Indonesian police's mobile brigade (Brimob Polri), the Jakarta Metro Police, Security and Intelligence Officers, as well as Internal Compliance of the Directorate General of Corrections.

"Alhamdulillah, the transfer process proceeded smoothly and safely," said Heri.
