TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita revealed that a Chinese energy company, Beiken Energy, is interested in exploring cooperation opportunities with Indonesia in the project of coal downstreaming into chemical products.
"Collaboration with Beiken Energy is expected to accelerate the downstreaming of the chemical industry, strengthen the national supply chain, and increase the substitution of imported chemical raw materials," said Agus Gumiwang in a written statement on Sunday, October 12, 2025.
The statement was made by Agus after a meeting with Beiken Energy in Shanghai, China, on Friday, October 10, 2025. He mentioned that up to now, Beiken has not invested in Indonesia.
Agus said the Beijing-based company is engaged in integrated engineering, oil and gas exploration and production, as well as energy conversion technology development, including coal gasification technology.
According to Agus, the technology from the company, established since 2009, can help develop the production of chemical materials from coal derivatives such as methanol, which is the raw material for petrochemicals like polyolefins, 1,4-Butanediol (BDO), olefins, and propylene.
Furthermore, Agus stated that Beiken has technology that can overcome the high pressure and temperature conditions commonly encountered in strategic projects in Indonesia.
Agus believes that the collaboration can strengthen the basic chemical industry and reduce dependency on imported raw materials.
He also committed that his ministry will bridge the synergy between domestic industry players and global partners to strengthen technology transfer and expand investment in downstream chemical industries. "With the support of strategic partners such as Beiken Energy, we are optimistic that the development of coal to chemical projects can accelerate the formation of a strong, efficient, and globally competitive chemical industry ecosystem," said the Golkar politician.
