India, Pakistan Exchange Fire as Tensions Rise Following Deadly Kashmir Attack

TEMPO.CO, JakartaIndian officials say their army was involved in a brief shootout with the Pakistani army along their highly militarized border in the Himalayan region of Kashmir. This comes amid escalating tensions between the two nuclear-armed rivals after gunmen killed 26 tourists near the Pahalgam resort town in the disputed region on Tuesday.

India immediately described the massacre as a "terror attack" and stated there was a "cross-border" connection, blaming Pakistan for supporting it.

Pakistan denied any connection to the attack, which was claimed by a previously unknown militant group calling itself the Kashmir Resistance.

Three Indian army officials, as reported by Arab News on Friday, April 25, 2025, said the Pakistani army used small arms to fire at Indian positions in Kashmir on Thursday night. The officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity in line with department policy, said the Indian army retaliated and no casualties were reported.

In Pakistan, the Foreign Ministry on Friday refused to confirm or deny the report. Ministry spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan said in a press conference, "I will wait for a formal confirmation from the military before I make any comment."

He added that there have been no efforts from other countries to mediate.

In the past, each side has accused the other of initiating border clashes in Kashmir, which both claim in its entirety. The United Nations has urged India and Pakistan to exercise restraint to avoid the current situation from deteriorating.

"Any issues between Pakistan and India, we believe can be and should be resolved peacefully, through meaningful, mutual engagement," the UN statement said on Friday.

Following the attack, India announced a series of diplomatic measures against Pakistan. New Delhi on Wednesday suspended a crucial water-sharing agreement that has survived two wars between the two countries.

They also closed the only functioning land border crossing between the two countries while reducing the number of diplomatic staff.

A day later, India revoked all visas issued to Pakistani nationals, effective from Sunday, April 27, 2025.

Pakistan on Thursday retaliated by canceling visas issued to Indian nationals while reiterating that it had nothing to do with the attack.

Pakistan is also closing its airspace to all Indian-owned or operated airlines and suspending all trade with India, including to and from any third country.

Pakistan also warned that any Indian attempts to stop or divert the flow of water would be considered an "act of war" and would be met with  “full force across the complete spectrum” of Pakistan’s national power.

Tuesday's attack in Kashmir was the worst in years, targeting civilians in the restive region that has witnessed an anti-India insurgency for over three decades.

India and Pakistan each administer parts of the Kashmir region. New Delhi describes all militancy in Kashmir as Pakistan-backed terrorism. Pakistan denies this, and many Muslim residents of Kashmir view the militants as part of a home-grown struggle for independence.
