TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will visit Indonesia to attend a ministerial-level meeting with Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono and Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, known as the 2+2 Dialogue.
“During his stay in Indonesia, Wang Yi will chair the first Conference of the China-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Dialogue and, together with Defense Minister Dong Jun, attend the second China-Indonesia Joint Dialogue between the foreign and defense ministers,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said, according to a statement on the ministry’s website accessed by Antara on Wednesday, August 19, 2026.
The China-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Dialogue (CSD) is scheduled for August 21, while Wang Yi’s visit is expected to run through August 22.
The CSD is a new bilateral ministerial-level mechanism established during Sugiono’s working visit to Beijing in April 2025.
The mechanism is intended to assess progress in bilateral cooperation and set strategic priorities for the future.
China-Indonesia Strategic Dialogues
On the same day as the CSD, Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry will host the second meeting of the 2+2 Dialogue mechanism between the Indonesian and Chinese foreign and defense ministers.
The 2+2 meeting will focus on strengthening political, defense and security cooperation at the bilateral, regional and global levels.
The two strategic meetings are expected to further deepen the comprehensive strategic partnership between Indonesia and China.
At the inaugural 2+2 meeting in Beijing on April 21, 2025, China and Indonesia agreed to expand security cooperation and build comprehensive and sustainable security ties based on five key pillars: economic cooperation, people-to-people relations, maritime affairs, politics and security.
The meeting also saw Sugiono and Wang Yi sign a memorandum of understanding establishing the Comprehensive Strategic Dialogue.
Cooperation on Security and Maritime Affairs
Indonesia and China also agreed to strengthen law enforcement cooperation, including mutual legal assistance, intelligence sharing and operational coordination to combat transnational crime, cybercrime and extremism.
As part of efforts to build strategic trust, the two countries also agreed to establish a new bilateral consultation mechanism on disarmament, non-proliferation and arms control.
In the maritime sector, Indonesia and China agreed to strengthen cooperation, including by enhancing coordination between the Indonesian Maritime Security Agency (Bakamla) and the China Coast Guard.
