Yogyakarta Hotels May Face Sanctions Over Excessive Eid Holiday Rates

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) in the Special Region of Yogyakarta is urging its members to comply with agreed hotel room pricing limits ahead of the 2026 Eid al-Fitr holiday, as millions of travelers are expected to visit the popular tourist destination.

The appeal comes after Indonesia’s Ministry of Transportation projected that around 8.2 million visitors, including holiday travelers and tourists, will travel to Yogyakarta during the Eid holiday period.

PHRI Yogyakarta chair Deddy Pranowo Eryono said hotel operators must adhere to the association’s upper and lower price limits when setting room rates during the peak travel season.

“The implementation of these price limits will help maintain a conducive and trustworthy tourism climate. Hotels should not take advantage of the situation by excessively raising room prices when Yogyakarta is flooded with tourists,” Deddy said on Wednesday, March 11, 2026.

PHRI Monitoring and Sanctions

Deddy said the association will closely monitor hotel pricing practices during the holiday period. PHRI Yogyakarta has also prepared a tiered sanction system for businesses that violate the agreed pricing guidelines.

Penalties will begin with first, second, and third warning letters, while the strictest sanction could include expulsion from PHRI membership, he said.

Despite the anticipated surge in visitors, Deddy estimated that the average hotel occupancy rate during the holiday period from March 17 to March 31, 2026, will reach around 85 percent for both starred and non-starred hotels.

“Overall, hotels in Yogyakarta are fully prepared to welcome visitors during the holiday season,” he added.

PHRI also advised tourists to choose legally registered accommodations to ensure consumer protection and fair pricing.

Eid Travel Surge

Meanwhile, Feni Novida Saragih, public relations manager of PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) Operational Area 6 Yogyakarta, reported strong passenger traffic at the start of the Eid travel period.

On the first day of the 2026 Eid transportation period, long-distance train services in the Yogyakarta operational area handled 25,844 passengers, including 13,198 arrivals and 12,646 departures.

The Eid travel period, known in Indonesia as the mudik season, is scheduled to last 22 days, ending on April 1, 2026.
