TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The West Java Health Office in Indonesia has urged residents to remain vigilant against the spread of Measles during the Eid al-Fitr homecoming period, when large numbers of people travel and gather across the country.

“Eid al-Fitr is a moment of massive movement and gatherings of many people. Therefore, the public needs to be cautious about the disease because it is easily transmissible,” said Vini Adiani, head of the provincial health office, in a press release on Thursday, March 12, 2026.

The warning follows a sharp rise in measles cases in West Java. The province recorded 1,785 confirmed cases in 2025, a significant jump from 271 cases in 2024. As of February 2026, authorities had already reported 252 cases this year.

Health officials noted that measles spreads easily through respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing, direct contact with infected individuals, or contact with contaminated surfaces. A single patient can potentially infect 12 to 18 other people, making it one of the most contagious viral diseases.

To prevent further transmission, the health office is encouraging parents to ensure children complete the two-dose measles vaccination, particularly those aged 9 to 59 months, before traveling during the Eid holiday.

West Java is currently implementing a Catch-Up Campaign (CUC), a simultaneous immunization program aimed at boosting measles protection among young children.

Vaccinations are available at integrated health posts, community health centers, educational institutions such as preschools and kindergartens, places of worship, and special service posts set up along major Eid travel routes.

Authorities also urged the public to follow clean and healthy living practices, including frequent handwashing with soap and wearing masks when ill. Residents experiencing symptoms such as fever and rash are advised to isolate themselves and seek medical attention promptly to prevent further spread.
