TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Student Executive Board of the University of Indonesia (BEM UI) is planning to stage a protest Tuesday afternoon as the parliament is set to ratify the Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP) Bill today.

According to Tempo's observation, UI students started assembling at 08:30 a.m. on campus grounds, preparing their protest attributes.

The majority of UI students wore black shirts while bringing their university blazers. They also prepared various protest attributes, such as placards with "REJECT RKHUP' 'EVERYONE CAN BE AFFECTED' written on them.

The coordinator, Rafa Al Gatran, mentioned that students had demonstrated against the KUHAP Bill last July. At that time, Rafa said, the parliament attempted to appear democratic by inviting several communities to discuss the bill, but it was ultimately a mere symbolic gesture.

"In the latest DPR upload Bang Delpedro [Mahraen] from Lokataru Foundation was mentioned, whom we all know is still detained," said Rafa.

Rafa mentioned that BEM UI welcomed the change to the Criminal Procedure Code, which has remained untouched since the colonial Dutch era. But the students hope for all elements of society, including civil groups, students, experts, and other communities, to be involved in the drafting to achieve satisfactory results.

"With today's ongoing rejection of the KUHAP Bill, it means that the process has not been democratic and satisfactory to many people," said Rafa.

He also emphasized that the people pushed back on the KUHAP Bill due to the lack of meaningful participation in the drafting process. "We no longer have huznuzon (positive presumption) towards the government or DPR. Ultimately, the KUHAP Bill today remains unsatisfactory and undemocratic in its process," explained Rafa.

The students of the University of Indonesia will join other campus student senates as well as civil society coalitions. "We're not a big crowd today, just two Kopaja buses with 88 people based on the [Google Form], but other campuses will join us," said Rafa.

The student protesters depart from campus at around 09:20 a.m.
