TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Two Indonesian films, Tale of the Land and Yohanna, showcased during Indonesian Day at the 2025 Asian Film Festival in Rome, Italy, garnered significant recognition, winning the Most Original Film and Best Actress awards, respectively.
Tale of the Land, directed by Loeloe Hendra Komara, received the Most Original Film Award. The film was lauded for its exceptional visual power and poetic narrative, as stated in a press release from the Indonesian Embassy in Rome on Thursday, April 17, 2025.
The festival jury commented on Tale of the Land: "This film has an extraordinary visual impact. Its visionary world, situated between land and water and presented with a poetic and evocative style, is rich in captivating cinematic metaphors that explore the traditions of Indonesian society. A family tragedy evolves into a universal story depicting a collective drama, suspended between the magic of dreams and the harshness of reality, and between myth and history."
Meanwhile, Laura Basuki was honored with the Best Actress award for her remarkable performance in Yohanna, directed by Razka Robby Ertanto.
The jury praised her role, stating that Laura Basuki masterfully brought to life a character of rare spiritual and human complexity, seamlessly blending tenderness and steadfastness, love, and disappointment.
"With a measured yet profound intensity, Laura Basuki guides us through the inner journey of a nun who transcends judgment to embrace the fragility of the world," the jury elaborated. "She presents a figure of faith that heals without being patronizing, loves without idealizing, and fights without losing the light of her soul."
The Indonesian Embassy in Rome accepted the awards on behalf of Loeloe Hendra Komara and Laura Basuki. The awards were presented in the form of paintings depicting scenes from the respective films.
Dilla Trianti, Counselor for Social and Cultural Information at the embassy, noted the rapid development of Indonesian cinema. She expressed hope that more Indonesian films would be introduced and appreciated in Italy, further strengthening the cultural ties between the two nations.
These two awards underscore the ability of Indonesian stories to resonate beyond geographical borders—touching hearts, inspiring minds, and achieving global recognition.
