TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An Iranian official said the United States is planning to deport hundreds of Iranian citizens in the coming weeks. Around 120 individuals who were deported in the first wave are expected to arrive in Iran in a few days, as U.S. President Donald Trump continues his immigration crackdown.
Hossein Noushabadi, the director general for parliamentary and consular affairs at the Iranian Foreign Ministry, told the Tasnim news agency on Tuesday, as quoted by Al Jazeera, that the U.S. immigration authorities plan to deport approximately 400 Iranian citizens.
Noushabadi said the first plane carrying Iranian citizens will arrive "within the next one or two days" after a stop in Qatar. Qatari authorities did not immediately comment on his statement.
Noushabadi mentioned that most of the targeted Iranian citizens had entered the U.S. without documentation, primarily through Mexico, while some were facing other immigration issues.
The deportations, not publicly acknowledged by the Trump administration, occur amidst ongoing high tensions between the two countries, following the U.S. joining its ally, Israel, in bombing Iran during a 12-day war in June.
These deportations are also part of broader harsh measures against migrants and asylum seekers in the U.S., with Trump vowing to carry out the largest deportation operation in the country's history.
Noushabadi stated that the U.S. authorities unilaterally made the decision to deport Iranian citizens without consulting Iran.
However, the New York Times, citing an unnamed Iranian official, reported that the deportations were the "the culmination of months of discussions between the two countries."
The U.S. outlet mentioned that some Iranians volunteered to leave after spending months in detention centers, while others did not.
A chartered U.S. flight departed from Louisiana on Monday and was scheduled to arrive in Qatar on Tuesday night so that the deported Iranians could be transferred to a flight to Tehran, according to a U.S. official.
The White House and the U.S. State Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Since taking office in January, Trump has set targets for deporting a large number of individuals residing in the U.S.
But his administration has struggled to raise the number of deportations, despite creating new avenues to send migrants to countries other than their nation of origin.
In February, the U.S. deported 119 individuals from various countries, including Iran, to Panama as part of an agreement between the two nations.
