TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Around 200 international tankers, according to shipping data from Lloyd's List Intelligence, have been stranded in the waters of the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman in the Middle East since traffic through the Strait of Hormuz nearly ground to a halt. Some chose to drop anchor. Others moved very slowly while waiting for developments in the security situation. For a week now, since war erupted between Iran and the United States-Israel coalition, the world's main oil trade route has been virtually paralyzed.
Among the hundreds of tankers stranded, four belong to Pertamina International Shipping (PIS), a subsidiary of Indonesia's state oil company Pertamina. Three vessels—Gamsunoro, PIS Paragon, and PIS Rinjani—are serving third-party customers. Another tanker, the superjumbo Pertamina Pride, a very large crude carrier, is transporting light crude oil to be processed at Pertamina refineries in Indonesia.
Acting Corporate Secretary of Pertamina International Shipping Vega Pita said the company is monitoring the position of its fleet, crews, and personnel in real time. "We are coordinating with maritime authorities and local officials to ensure the security and safety of all crew members and the cargo they carry," she said in a written statement on Thursday, March 5, 2026.
Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said the government is pursuing diplomatic channels to secure the release of Pertamina Pride and Gamsunoro, which remained "trapped" in the waters of the Persian Gulf. The ships were currently docked while seeking safer locations. "Meanwhile, we are negotiating," Bahlil said at the Energy Ministry office in Jakarta on Wednesday, March 4, 2026.
