TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is set to sign a presidential decree establishing a task force to innovate financing and management of the country’s national parks. The initiative aims to secure sustainable funding for Indonesia’s 57 national parks.
Prabowo’s younger brother, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, has been appointed as the head of the task force. The vice chair positions will be held by Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni and the President’s Special Envoy for International Trade and Multilateral Cooperation, Mari Elka Pangestu.
“We will seek innovative and sustainable funding, including involving the private sector, so that our national parks will become world-class,” Raja Juli said at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday, March 12, 2026.
Raja Juli noted that national park management in Indonesia has long suffered from limited funding.
“As we know, we have 57 national parks in Indonesia. So far, they have been managed with very minimal funding,” he said.
He added that more than 50 national parks currently operate at a loss and have not generated any revenue.
“Our national parks have become cost centers. They are an expense, not a profit center,” Raja Juli said.
To change this, the task force plans to develop ecotourism initiatives as a revenue source. Funds generated from ecotourism will be reinvested to improve park facilities and management, reducing the financial burden on the government.
“The goal is to make money through ecotourism, and that money will be used to enhance our national parks,” Raja Juli explained.
