TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto has backed a plan to develop 8,000 hectares of agricultural land in Nagekeo Regency on Flores Island, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), while calling for adequate water supplies to support the project.
Prabowo voiced his support during a coordination meeting on the post-earthquake response in NTT on Wednesday, August 26.
“I noted the suggestion from the regent. I think this is very good, and we will support it,” Prabowo said, according to a livestream by the Presidential Secretariat.
He asked the Nagekeo administration to ensure sufficient water for the planned agricultural area, saying supplies could come from dams or groundwater wells if necessary.
Prabowo said water availability would be essential for the development and that the land could be used to increase food production in the region.
Nagekeo Regent Simplisius Donatos said the planned agricultural area is concentrated in Mbay District. Most of the 8,000 hectares are located inland, while around 100 hectares are near the coast.
Prabowo suggested that the coastal portion could instead be used for aquaculture.
“Perhaps the 100 hectares near the coast can be used for fish farming,” he said.
He said the 100-hectare area was large enough to be developed for aquaculture, while the remaining land would be used for agriculture.
NTT Governor Melki Laka Lena said the water requirement for the agricultural development could be supported by the Lambo Dam, whose construction is about 90 percent complete.
The dam is expected to be completed within the next two to three months and has a storage capacity of around 45 million cubic meters.
Laka Lena said the availability of water from the dam would allow the 8,000-hectare agricultural development to proceed with the construction of an irrigation network.
