TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - In response to several Russian military aircraft entering the South Korean Air Defense Identification Zone (KADIZ) over the country's eastern waters, the South Korean military dispatched fighter jets. The Russian aircraft eventually exited the zone.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said Wednesday that Russian military aircraft entered the KADIZ near South Korea's easternmost islets of Dokdo and Ulleung Island on Tuesday afternoon, August 25, before withdrawing from the air defense zone.
"The South Korean military detected the Russian military aircraft before they entered the air defense zone and deployed Air Force fighter jets to prepare for any possible contingencies," the JCS said in a statement, as quoted by ANTARA.
The JCS added that the planes did not violate South Korean airspace.
The air defense zone is not the same as territorial airspace. It was established to require foreign aircraft to identify themselves and prevent accidental collisions.
The incident is the latest after nearly 10 Chinese and Russian military aircraft entered and then left the KADIZ over waters east and south of South Korea in late June.
At that time, the South Korean Ministry of Defense lodged a strong protest with China and Russia regarding the unannounced entry of the planes.
