Prabowo Says Indonesian Teachers Still Need Training Due to Skill Gaps

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto said many teachers still need additional training and upgraded competencies as Indonesia pushes ahead with its nationwide digital learning initiative.

He made the remarks while launching the “Digitalization for a Smart Indonesia” program at SMPN 4 Bekasi, West Java, on Monday, November 17, 2025.

Prabowo said the digitalization effort is intended to help the country “leapfrog” longstanding weaknesses in the education system, particularly gaps in teacher quality.

“This digitalization is our effort to leap forward. We are aware of our shortcomings. We know teachers need further training, and we know exactly which subjects require improvement,” Prabowo said in his speech.

He highlighted that many teachers still struggle with foreign languages and science subjects, including English, biology, chemistry, and physics. Limited access to laboratories in several regions, he added, may be contributing to these competency gaps.

“This is one way to accelerate progress. Even as we take this leap, we will continue working to improve all schools across Indonesia,” he said.

Meanwhile, Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu’ti reported that 172,550 interactive flat panels, or digital interactive boards, have so far been distributed to schools and Community Learning Activity Centers (PKBM).

Mu’ti said the distribution took place between August 15 and November 16, 2025, and that the equipment will eventually reach 288,865 schools and PKBMs nationwide.

“Another 43,022 units are currently in delivery, representing 75 percent of the 288,865 panels we aim to distribute by December 17, 2025,” Mu’ti said.

He explained that the rollout of digital boards is part of the implementation of Presidential Instruction No. 7/2025 on accelerating school development, revitalization, and digital learning.

The digitalization program includes the distribution of interactive flat panels, the provision of laptops and learning materials, and training for teachers.

Mu’ti added that the ministry is actively monitoring and evaluating the schools that have received the new technology.

“We have seen significant changes in the learning process. Classrooms are becoming more engaging and enthusiastic, and learning outcomes continue to improve,” he said.
