TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto is confident that Indonesia’s waste problems will be fully resolved within the next two to three years. He emphasized that it can be managed by utilizing domestic waste processing technology.
Prabowo shared this vision during a briefing for the Red and White Cabinet and various agency leaders at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday, April 8, 2026. On this occasion, the Head of State asserted that the government possesses a robust strategy powered by technology developed by the nation's own people.
"Universities need to step up, and they are already doing so. We now have our own technology to manage waste—developed by us, without the high costs of foreign solutions. Within two to three years, we will solve the waste issue across Indonesia," Prabowo stated.
He expressed optimism that waste issues across Indonesia will cease in the future. The Gerindra Party Chairman promised there will no longer be a stench of garbage on street corners.
"There will be no town, no street, and no part of Indonesia, from Sabang to Merauke, that smells of garbage anymore," Prabowo declared.
Previously, Prabowo Subianto instructed his cabinet ministers to expedite the implementation of regional waste management systems. This initiative is part of the waste-to-energy program spearheaded by the Investment Managing Agency, Danantara.
Discussions on this policy were held during a limited meeting at Prabowo's residence in Hambalang, Bogor, on Wednesday, March 25, 2026. The meeting was attended by the Head of Danantara and Minister of Investment, Rosan Perkasa Roeslani, along with several cabinet ministers.
"The Head of Danantara, Bapak Rosan Roeslani, reported on the development of the waste-to-energy (WTE) program or waste management program into energy throughout Indonesia, especially in large and densely populated cities such as Jakarta, Tangerang, Bandung, Semarang, Surabaya, Medan, Bali, and other cities in Indonesia," said Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya in a statement.
President Prabowo, according to Teddy, wants regional waste to be handled promptly by the central government. "President Prabowo wants the Central Government to promptly manage the long-unattended waste in the regions to be cleaned up, removed, and utilized to become energy, especially electricity," Teddy said.
